The launch took place from a spaceport north of Chennai.
Aboard the rocket are two satellites that will conduct a docking experiment in space.
It is noted that docking is critical for manned missions to the Moon or maintaining the space station.
ISRO chief Sridhara Somanath confirmed that the rocket launched the satellites into the designated orbit.
On December 31, the spacecraft began the testing process. While the final docking will take place on approximately January 7.
