The concept of a BRICS currency was initiated by one of the members of the group, but no decision was made on this issue.
BRICS countries are not interested in weakening the dollar. This is what Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmaniyam Jaishankar said, Reuters reported on Saturday, December 7.
The head of the central bank of India, Shaktikanta Das, noted that the country does not continue a policy of rejecting the dollar and has not made any decisions on the BRICS currency.
“We have not taken a single step specifically aimed at de-dollarization,” he assured.
India has entered into trade agreements denominated in local currencies to mitigate some risks, he said, because “relying on one currency can sometimes be problematic due to appreciation or devaluation.”
Das emphasized that dedollarization is “definitely not our goal,” noting that the concept of a BRICS currency was initiated by one of the group’s members, but no decision on this issue has been made.
Let’s recall that the former US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on goods from the BRICS countries if they did not abandon attempts to create an alternative to the dollar in international trade.
In South Africa, after Trump’s threats, they made a statement about the “common currency” of BRICS.
