President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky met with President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili.
They were both in Paris and met on Saturday, December 7th. The Ukrainian leader said that Kyiv supports and stands in solidarity with the Georgian people, who are defending their future at rallies. This was reported by the Office of the President.
We are with your people, of course, and are always on the side of your country, your way of life and your choice of future membership in the EU and NATO. Always with your people. We see everything, we support,” he said.
But Zurabishvili spoke about massive violations during the recent Georgian parliamentary elections in Georgia, in particular, about the restriction of voting rights of Georgians living abroad. I also remembered the large-scale protests that continue.
The leader of Georgia also thanked for everything shown for the sanctions imposed against the founder of the Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili and 18 of his accomplices, including Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
And Zelensky noted that these sanctions were directed against individuals pushing Georgians towards Russia.
Let us recall that on December 4, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Kyiv was preparing a legal position in relation to Georgia. And already on December 5, Ukraine imposed sanctions against Georgian officials. 19 officials, led by the de facto leader of the Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishivili, were subject to restrictions.
Protests in Georgia have continued since November 28, when head of government Irakli Kobakhidze announced the suspension of the country’s European integration until 2028.
Police use water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters. The EU and the US have condemned the violence and are also talking about sanctions.
