The exemption, which expires on December 5, allows Slovakia’s only refinery, Slovnaft, to export petroleum products made from Russian oil to the Czech Republic.
Slovakia intends to negotiate with the European Union on extending the validity of sanctions exemptions against Russian oil. Bloomberg reported this on Thursday, November 14.
The EU imposed sanctions on Russian oil following Moscow’s sweeping invasion of Ukraine in 2022, although Slovakia and neighboring Czech Republic and Hungary granted exemptions for a smooth transition to other sources .
The exemption, which expires on December 5, allows Slovakia’s only refinery, Slovnaft, to export petroleum products made from Russian oil to the Czech Republic.
Without this permission, Slovakia can only produce products for the domestic market.
At the same time, if Slovnaft cannot process Russian oil, “there will be big consequences,” said Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar. Also, according to him, the Russian Federation “has become a reliable partner.”
Earlier it became known that the Slovak gas transmission system operator Eustream and the country’s largest energy trader SPP annually earn up to $1.5 billion from Russian gas operations.
