The agreement between Moscow and Kiev regarding the export of Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of the year, forcing Slovakia in particular to look for alternative sources.

SPP, the main gas buyer in Slovakia, has signed a short-term pilot contract for the purchase of natural gas from Azerbaijan. The company will also consider the possibility of concluding a long-term agreement related to the possible suspension of supplies from Russia through Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters on Wednesday, November 13.

An agreement between Moscow and Kiev to export Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe expires at the end of the year, forcing SPP and other buyers in the European Union to look for alternative sources, particularly in Azerbaijan.

The company has diversified its gas purchase contracts with companies such as BP, Exxon Mobil, Shell, Eni and RWE, with access to volumes covering up to 150% of its customers’ needs, which capable of further increasing reserves.

Also, if supplies through Ukraine are stopped, the company has alternative routes for transit, including a gas pipeline from Germany to the Czech Republic.

In addition, the southern route with the Turkish Stream gas pipeline through the Black Sea, where part of the Russian or Azerbaijani gas can be supplied, will be important.

However, if travel to Ukraine stops, the company will have to take additional measures to ensure the security of supplies.

It was previously known that the Polish group Orlen signed a contract with Slovak ZSE Group for gas supplies, which will cover about 30% of ZSE’s needs for the year.

Azerbaijan recently reportedly offered Ukraine and the European Union to supply natural gas to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system against the backdrop of the expiration of the contract with the Russian Federation.
