The German state budget received the first monetary compensation for lost Russian gas.

Energy company Uniper transferred 530 million euros to the German budget as part of a dispute with Russian Gazprom over damages for lost gas. The company’s press service reported this on Tuesday, November 5.

As part of stabilization measures by the German authorities, Uniper has pledged to hand over to the government any compensation payments it receives for cuts in gas supplies, after deducting legal costs and taxes.

At the end of last year, Uniper had already recorded a provision of around 2.2 billion euros for expected payment obligations to Germany in connection with aid granted in 2022.

“The company reviewed the value of the provision as of September 30 and, based on this, estimated it at just under 2.5 billion euros. The exact amount of the payment obligation will be calculated based on the company’s financial performance for 2024,” the report said. .

The funds are expected to be transferred to the German government in early 2025.

As is known, 19 companies from 11 European countries have filed a lawsuit against Russian Gazprom for breach of gas contracts, and their total amount has reached 18.6 billion euros, or 20.6 billion dollars.

Let’s recall that the Stockholm arbitration court allowed the German company Uniper to terminate a long-term contract with Gazprom Export and awarded it 13 billion euros in compensation for shortages in gas supplies from mid-2022.

In September, German Economics and Energy Minister Robert Habeck said the country had overcome Russia’s gas shortage.
