The visits examine the operational impacts of actual and potential damage to substations that provide off-site power to the country’s nuclear power plants.
A group of IAEA experts this week, at Ukraine’s request, is inspecting Ukrainian power substations to assess the safety of nuclear energy facilities. This was stated in a message on the organization’s official website.
At the request of Ukraine, an IAEA team is visiting six electrical substations in Ukraine this week as part of the Agency’s work to assess the state of the electrical grid infrastructure necessary for nuclear safety, which began in “September operational consequences of actual and potential damage to substations that provide electricity off-site for the country’s nuclear power plants,” the statement said.
The IAEA explained that reliable access to an external power source is one of the seven indispensable pillars of ensuring nuclear safety during armed conflict, outlined by the organization’s director general, Rafael Grossi, two and half a year ago.
“The safety of the operation of nuclear power plants depends on a stable connection to the network, but the situation in this regard has become increasingly unstable in recent months. The IAEA already has teams of staff assigned to all Ukrainian nuclear power plants that help support nuclear safety during military conflict,” the organization said.
The IAEA added that the organization continues to implement a comprehensive assistance program to maintain nuclear safety in Ukraine, including through the delivery of necessary equipment.
We remind you that at the beginning of the week it was reported that the IAEA continued its monitoring mission in Ukraine. This is the result of negotiations with the leadership of the IAEA with the participation of the President of the country, Vladimir Zelensky.
In Ukraine, seven substations have been identified as important for the transmission of electricity from nuclear plants, covered by the missions of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
