The laying of the Euro-gauge track on the Chop-Uzhgorod section is planned to be completed at the beginning of the third quarter of 2025.
Passenger trains from Uzhgorod will be able to run on European standard tracks to Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Dresden and Bucharest from 2025. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Finance of Ukraine Alexander Kava, CFTS reports on Thursday, October 24.
The laying of the Euro-gauge track on the Chop-Uzhgorod section is planned to be completed at the beginning of the third quarter of 2025.
“Active work is currently underway in the Chop-Uzhgorod section,” he said.
The official expressed hope that next year passenger trains can travel from Uzhgorod on Eurogauge to Bratislava and Prague, Vienna, Dresden and Bucharest. And he added that there are all possibilities to do so.
It is expected that passengers will be subject to control at the Uzhgorod station.
Ukrzaliznytsia started the implementation of a strategic program for the development of the European standard gauge in Ukraine. As part of the project, UZ is relaying a wide gauge track, leveling it in the Strumkivka-Chop section, where in the future the Euro-gauge track will also be laid in parallel.
3.5 km of the required 8.3 km of tracks have been rebuilt. These works are planned to be completed this year. In addition, the bridge is repaired and the corresponding communications are constantly updated.
There will be two parallel gauges between Uzhgorod and Chop: wide gauge – 1520 mm and Euro gauge – 1435 mm.
The total cost of the project is UAH 1.3 billion, 50% of which is financed from the EU Connecting Europe Facilit (CEF).
Earlier, Shmygal said that Uzhgorod becomes the first regional center of Ukraine to be connected by Euro-gauge to Europe.
We remind you that the Chop-Prague train started operating in March. The flights are operated by the Czech carrier RegioJet, with which Ukrzaliznytsia has entered into a contract.
