Metinvest faced major challenges related to staff shortages due to the mobilization of army workers. The holding’s operating director Alexander Mironenko said this in an interview with Germany’s largest daily newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitug.
According to him, the company currently lacks 4,000 employees – this is a fifth of the required number. And one of the main reasons for the shortage is certainly mobilization.
“We are one of the leading companies on the issue of mobilization and have remained so since the beginning. We employ approximately 60,000 employees, and of these, more than 8,000 employees are on the front line. Unfortunately, more of 600 of our workers have Died that every month our companies operate from 100 to 170 employees And it is very difficult to find new people, “said Mironenko.
He said that many men in Ukraine choose unofficial work to avoid the attention of military registration and enlistment offices and not to be mobilized into the army. Metinvest cannot book the required number of employees – the law does not allow this.
“For the continuous operation of a technologically complex production, such as metallurgical production, 50% of the staff is not enough, you need to reserve at least 80% of the employees, of course, you can mobilize all the Ukrainian workers, but without the economy and taxes, nobody won the war,” said Mironenko.
He recalled that in the first half of 2024, Metinvest paid almost 10 billion hryvnias (just under 217 million euros) in taxes and fees.
Earlier, Metinvest called the lack of personnel the main challenge for industrial enterprises in Ukraine. Businesses are already facing a situation where they cannot increase production due to lack of workers.
It was also reported that a week ago the Cabinet of Ministers changed the procedure for mobilization of reservation.
