Judge Alexandre de Moraes gave companies including Apple and Google a five-day deadline to take down social network X.
A panel of the Brazilian Supreme Court on Monday, September 2, upheld the decision to suspend Elon Musk’s social network X (Twitter) in the country. The BBC reported this on Tuesday, September 3.
The justices voted unanimously for the measure, meaning the ban will remain in effect.
Social network X has been banned in Brazil because it failed to appoint a new legal representative in the country by a court-imposed deadline. It’s a new chapter in the standoff between Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and social media site X owner Elon Musk that began in April when a judge ordered the blocking of dozens of accounts for allegedly spreading false information.
Later, Moraes called a five-member panel to decide to suspend the work of the social network X, which led to a split in Brazil.
“Freedom of speech is the basis of democracy, and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes,” said Elon Musk, responding to the decision to ban the social network.
Judge Moraes gave companies including Apple and Google a five-day deadline to remove social network X from their app stores and block its use on iOS and Android devices. Individuals or companies still accessing social network X using virtual private networks (VPNs) can be fined 50,000 reais ($8,910).
Judge Moraes ordered the suspension of social media accounts X, accused of spreading disinformation, many of which belong to supporters of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, while an investigation is underway.
Brazil is considered one of the biggest markets for Elon Musk’s social media. Currently, many Brazilians are looking for an alternative.
Recall that the Brazilian court said that Musk launched a disinformation campaign and that X was abusing economic power to illegally influence public opinion.
