The Russian Federation is currently completely dependent on MDI imports, and especially after the introduction of the 14th package of sanctions by the European Union.
Companies from China and Saudi Arabia have stopped supplying isocyanates to Russia. Russia is 100% dependent on supplies. This was reported by the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.
Chinese chemical giant Wanhua Chemical Group and Saudi company Sadara Chemical have stopped supplying isocyanates (MDI) to Russia. This chemical product is widely used in the automobile industry, construction, household appliances and other industries.
Russia is completely dependent on MDI imports, and after the EU imposed the 14th package of sanctions, companies from the EU, USA and Japan also stopped exporting it.
It is worth noting that a feature of MDI is its very short shelf life, so a longer delivery through intermediaries from third countries that help Russia avoid sanctions seems impossible.
In 2014, Russia planned to launch its own MDI production, but for 10 years not a single full-fledged plant has been built.
Due to the refusal of China and Saudi Arabia to export MDI to the Russian Federation, 20 largest representatives of the Russian automobile industry, construction companies and manufacturers of household goods wrote a joint letter to the government requesting them to take immediate steps.
