The price of fish worldwide increased by 25% between December 2021 and April 2022. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
This rise adds to the list of products that have risen in price in the food system, which is “very worrying” for the FAO, as it puts pressure on consumers around the world.
“It is very important for us not only to produce stable and in a fair but affordable way,” said Manuel Barange, FAO Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, during the UN Oceans Conference.
Given the need to ensure that production is accessible to all, FAO points out that aquaculture needs to be developed at a lower cost and with “less intensive” production needs.
Despite this, the FAO representative ruled out that higher prices could lead to more overfishing or illegal fishing.
“If management is good, it doesn’t put pressure on resources,” Barange said.
The FAO Officer commented that in the United States, 92% of the population is under sustainable management; in New Zealand and Australia – 85% and 86% respectively.
“We must ensure sustainable management of resources, and then externalities will not matter,” he insisted.
They added that growth aquaculture it has taken fisheries and aquaculture production to an all-time high, and for this reason it is playing an increasingly critical role in ensuring food security and eradicating world hunger.
