Electricity tariff in the amount of 2.64 UAH. covered only a third of its true value, the department said.
The Government of Ukraine established a fixed price for electricity for the population at 4.32 UAH/kWh. This decision was forced and necessary to ensure that the country will not be left without electricity supply in the face of Russian attacks on the energy system, the Ministry of Energy announced on Friday, May 31.
“Increasing the tariff is a difficult but necessary step. The goal is not to be left without electricity, to maintain the system is facing a large-scale reconstruction, which requires enormous efforts and money continues in the generation, distribution and transmission facilities. Unfortunately , We understand that the shelling of the enemy’s energy facilities will continue, and we must use all possible resources,” said Energy Minister German Galushchenko.
According to him, if Russia had not systematically destroyed the energy infrastructure of Ukraine, then the tariffs would have remained unchanged for now.
The minister explained that in a difficult economic situation due to the war, it is impossible to allow an increase in the price of electricity for the population at the market level (about 7.5 UAH/kWh), but the state in these conditions has no chance to maintain a very low preferential price for all buyers. After all, the electricity tariff is 2.64 UAH. covered only a third of the real cost of electricity.
“Government support must be fair and aimed at those who really need it. Those who cannot afford to pay for electricity services in the new tariff will receive help from state-targeted subsidies,” the minister stressed.
On Friday, it was noted that the Cabinet of Ministers has sharply increased the cost of electricity for the population from June 1, 2024. The Ministry of Energy noted that with an average monthly electricity consumption of 170 kWh, the payment will increase by 285 hryvnia.
A few days ago it was reported that Ukraine raised the maximum price for electricity for businesses. They will also start operating on June 1.
Tariffs for the population have not been changed since last year, but this issue reappeared on the agenda after attacks on the Russian energy sector in Ukraine this spring. Most of the thermal power plants were disabled, and several hydroelectric power stations were also damaged. The government plans to get additional funds for the repair and restoration of energy facilities by increasing the tariff.
