China’s ruling party continues to tighten its controls on internet use in the country, introducing blanket censorship of sensitive topics on social media.
Apple has removed Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp and Threads apps from its Chinese App Store. The reason was an order from the Chinese government, citing national security reasons, Reuters reports.
Two other foreign messaging apps – Telegram and Signal – have also been removed from the store, according to app tracking companies Qimai and AppMagic.
The removal of these four apps reportedly reflects a growing intolerance on the part of China’s central government for at least some foreign online messaging services outside its control. It also means less freedom for Apple to operate in China.
As you know, China’s ruling party continues to tighten control over Internet use in the country, introducing complete censorship of sensitive topics on social networks and monitoring communications. China’s top political leaders are proposing to limit the time children spend on the Internet.
The publication writes that the removal of WhatsApp and Threads occurs on the eve of a vote in the US legislature on a bill that will force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok, otherwise it will face a ban on the US market .
It was previously reported that Apple, Google and Meta face fines of 10% of revenue due to new legislation aimed at limiting the influence of large technology companies. The EU has launched a massive investigation into these companies.
We remind you that Apple intends to introduce AI in all its gadgets.
