World food prices fell by 10% over the year

World prices for grain, vegetable oil and dairy products fell. At the same time, the price of meat and sugar increased.

World food prices fell 0.7% in February. Over the year, food prices fell by 10.5%. This was reported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO.

The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices for a range of commodities, fell to 117.3 points.

Cereal price index reduced by 5%. Prices are 22.4% below values ​​in February 2023. Export prices for corn have fallen further as the market is pressured by expectations of large harvests in Argentina and Brazil, as well as those competitive prices offered by Ukraine.

For wheat, the drop in world prices is mainly a result of lower export prices due to high export rates from Russia, which puts downward pressure on prices from other countries, particularly that the European Union.

Oil price index fell 1.3% and was 11% lower than last year. The decline was mainly reflected in lower global prices for soybean, sunflower and rapeseed oils, which more than offset a slight increase in palm oil prices.

Meat price index grew by 1.8%, which is 0.8% lower than the corresponding amount last year. International price quotes increased the most for chicken, followed by beef.
Sugar Price Index increased by 3.2% and 12.5% ​​higher than last year’s value. Continued concern about the prospects for the upcoming season in Brazil, following a prolonged period of below-average rainfall, continues to support world sugar prices, adding to the time pressure increase. In addition, forecasts indicating a likely decrease in production in Thailand and India, two leading exporting countries, contributed to the increase in prices.

Let us remind you that in Ukraine in January, prices for fermented milk cottage cheese, hard and semi-hard cheese, sour cream, kefir and butter have increased.
