The US Department of Transportation has fined Neuralink, a company owned by entrepreneur Elon Musk, for violating regulations on the movement of hazardous materials. Reuters reported this on Friday, January 26, after reviewing ministry documents.
During inspections of the company’s facilities in Texas and California in February 2023, investigators reportedly discovered that Neuralink was not registered as a carrier of hazardous materials even though it was engaged in such activity.
Inspectors also found that hazardous waste at the facilities was improperly packaged, including flammable xylene.
“According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, xylene can cause headaches, dizziness, confusion, loss of muscle coordination and even death,” the agency explained.
According to the documents, the Ministry of Transport fined Neuralink a total of just $2,480 because the company agreed to “resolve the problems.”
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, which conducted the inspection of Neuralink, confirmed the violation and fine, and also said the investigation has been closed.
Amazon’s French warehouse division has been fined €32 million in France for its “overly intrusive” staff monitoring system.
The American corporation Apple has paid a fine of 1.2 billion rubles imposed by the Russian antimonopoly authorities on the Russian budget. The funds arrived in the Russian budget on January 19.
