Citizens complained that coins in the denominations of one and two hryvnias are the same, which is why they often get confused.
The design of the 1 and 2 hryvnia coins will be changed to make them easier to identify. The Deputy Head of the NBU, Aleksey Shaban, spoke about this in an interview with The Page.
According to him, the National Bank started preparations for the redesign in 2021 after complaints from Ukrainians about the uniformity of these coins.
“We started preparing for changes: we formed a working group, held focus groups, and started discussing possible changes in the design of one of these coins. Because of a massive war in February last year, this work has been paused, but after the situation in the country stabilizes, we will return to him,” said Shaban.
He noted that updating the design of banknotes and coins is a constant process for all central banks, and the NBU is no exception to this.
“Such changes should be carried out on average every seven to ten years, especially to increase the security of the currency,” said Shaban.
He also added that the upcoming design changes should be made in consultation with the public.
We remind you that the NBU introduced coins in denominations of 1 and 2 UAH into circulation at the end of 2018.
After that, stores were allowed to keep cash when paying.
