The BE-HyStore pilot project involves the storage of hydrogen in the underground aquifer of the Lenhout storage facility.
Belgium is starting an experiment to study the possibility of underground hydrogen storage. This was announced on October 24 by the national gas transport operator Fluxys.
It was noted that the experiments will be conducted in an underground storage facility in Lenhout in the province of Antwerp.
Fluxys’ partners in these studies are the French Geostock and the University of Ghent.
The release states that this is the first experiment in the world to inject hydrogen into an aquifer.
Built on an aquifer, the Fluxys Loenhout UGS facility has been in operation since 1985. The storage tank is located at a depth of more than one kilometer.
It was previously reported that a deposit of white hydrogen, considered the “fuel of the future,” was discovered in France.
