The “pause” of Ukraine’s complaint to the WTO is not enough; Warsaw demands that Kyiv withdraw the complaint, and not suspend consideration.
Poland considers Ukraine’s decision to “pause” the process at the World Trade Organization related to the grain dispute insufficient. Polish government spokesman, Piotr Müller, announced this on RMF FM on October 6.
“Ultimately, we are asking for the withdrawal of the complaint, not the suspension of consideration. This is a good step, but not enough. We are definitely not talking about lifting the grain embargo,” he said.
The previous day, Deputy Minister of Economy and Ukrainian Trade Representative Taras Kachka said that Ukraine has “stopped” its complaints against Poland, Hungary and Slovakia at the World Trade Organization.
Kachka emphasized that work continues on a “practical resolution” of the trade dispute. Speaking about the situation in Poland, Kachka expressed hope that the parties will be able to return to the discussion after the election, as there are no systemic obstacles to solving the problem.
Let’s recall that on September 18, Ukraine began to appeal to the WTO the actions of Poland, Slovakia and Hungary after they introduced unilateral restrictions on the import of certain types of Ukrainian agricultural products.
The government of Ukraine adopted a resolution on a new mechanism for verification and coordination of agricultural exports to Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
