The NAPC listed the world’s largest private wine company, Bacardi, as an international sponsor of the war.
Bermuda-based Bacardi Limited, which imported $169 million worth of goods to Russia last year, has been listed by the National Corruption Prevention Agency as an international sponsor of war. This was reported by the NAPC press service on Thursday, August 10.
Bacardi Limited is the world’s largest private international spirits company, with its products sold in more than 170 countries. The company’s well-known brands include the brandy Baron Otard, D’USSÉ; Bombay gin; rum Bacardi; tequila Cazadores; vodka Gray Goose, Eristoff; whiskey Dewar’s, William Lawson’s, Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Royal Brackla, Craigellachie, Angel’s Envy and other drinks (Martini, St-Germain, Bénédictine).
In total, Bacardi owns more than 200 brands, including rum of the same name with the company’s name brand, which is the best-selling rum brand in the world.
After Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine, Bacardi announced a halt to exports to the Russian Federation and a halt to investment in advertising, but this part of the message later disappeared from its official statement. As a result, the company continued to supply millions of dollars worth of its products to Russia and was looking for new employees by posting job postings.
The exit of a number of leading international brand owners from the Russian alcohol market has reduced competition and created opportunities for those that remain. So, taking advantage of the situation, the Russian division of Bacardi Rus imported goods worth $169 million during the year of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
According to data on the website of the Federal Tax Service of the Russian Federation, the income of Bacardi Rus in 2022 grew by 8.5%, up to 32.6 billion rubles, and net profit – up to 4.7 billion rubles, which is 206.5% more than in 2021. ( 1.5 billion rubles), more than $12 million in income tax was paid to the Russian budget.
“Thus, Bacardi Limited continues to pay significant taxes to the budget of Russia, supports its economy and sponsors aggression against Ukraine,” the NACP stressed.
Recall that in June the NAPC excluded the first company from the list of international sponsors of the war – the Irish Peninsula Petroleum Limited, which is the world’s supplier of marine fuel.
NAPC identified the sponsor of the war as the producer of Mishka Barney and Milky
