The head of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Nelly Paredes, ruled out the delivery of new bonds to deal with the emergency due to rains.
“At the moment, we continue to collect bonds that we have under consideration, including the term drought bond it has been expanded,” Paredes said at a press conference.
The minister pointed out that agricultural accident insurance is being confused with a bonus, but clarified that the measure is about compensating farmers who report damage to their crops.
“Other mechanisms are being worked out within the framework of Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance, because we have made a reality assessment,” he added.
But given that today 42000 affected crops and lost more than 38,000 hectares, what is being done?
The minister indicated that the issue of creating a new insurance, which will be partly funded by the state, is being considered.
“Currently, work is underway so that we, as a ministry, can finance 80% agricultural insurance. This means that a farmer who takes out a loan can pay for the insurance, and if this affects it, it is similar to the credit life insurance that Agrobanco and the savings banks are already working on,” he explained.
Paredes recalled that in August the insurance under which the contract was concluded, that is, Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance, ends, and “new procedures are already being carried out so that this can be achieved with new insurers.”
The minister added that in order to complete this project, they are conducting an analysis of the situation of farmers through Agrobanco to find out what their portfolio is in terms of credit.
