In metropolitan Lima, 8 out of every 100 economically active people are unemployed and is actively looking for work, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics.

Until January 2023, Lima’s unemployment rate is known to be 8%, affecting about 443,600 people, lower than last year, but still higher than it was before the pandemic.

At the national level, with data up to September, unemployment It affected just over 730,000 Peruvians, representing 4% of the economically active population. But could the numbers reach alarming levels, given the recent shutdowns that have sparked demonstrations?

The manager of the Economic and Social Research Institute of the National Society of Industry (SNI), Antonio Castillo, indicates that the number may increase due to protests and economic slowdowns, and recalled that in the early years of the pandemic, we even exceeded one million unemployed.

“The unemployment rate could increase in the coming months. unemployment in 2021 it reached one million 29 thousand people; However, in the run-up to 2022, these numbers are declining. There are currently 732,000 unemployed nationwide in the third quarter of the year,” it says.

For his part, Paola del Carpio, research coordinator of the Red de Estudios para el Desarrollo (REDES), believes that despite the impact of some shutdowns on payment chains, a return to the level of the unemployment record.

“I doubt that this will take us to the level of 2020, however I am concerned that this will further jeopardize Job over the medium term because these companies, which are currently struggling, may need some time to recover.”

He added that at the moment more than 40% of Peruvians are unemployed, more than 8 million Peruvians and almost 8 out of 10 work informally.

“This is definitely a problem that jumps even higher than unemployment in our country that employment insecurity could worsen,” he said.
