The reduction is related to a warm winter, as well as a decrease in fertilizer production and electricity generation due to high gas prices.
In Lithuania, the consumption of natural gas will decrease by more than a third in 2022. This was announced on January 24 by the operator of the gas network Amber Grid.
“In 2022, Lithuania will consume 15.6 TWh of gas, which is 35% less than in 2021, when the country’s gas demand reached 24 TWh,” the company said.
It was noted that the reduction is related to a significant decrease in the production of fertilizers in the country and electricity generation in Lithuanian power plants due to high prices for blue fuel. In addition, it was facilitated by a warm winter and the decision to use fuel oil for heating Vilnius.
At the same time, the transfer of raw gas through the Lithuanian gas transmission system, according to Amber Grid, increased by 21%. This change is due to the increase in the flow of gas to Latvia against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, as well as the opening in May last year of a new gas pipeline connection to Poland.
“Last year, gas consumption in EU countries decreased by an average of one fifth, while demand in the Baltic countries and Finland decreased by up to 35-40%. Lithuania has become an important partner in gas transportation for its neighbors,” the operator emphasized.
It was previously reported that Europe increased imports of liquefied natural gas by 60% last year.
