Egg production on farms in the south of the country is 10% lower due to changes in diet in laying hens said Alex Geri, representative of the Poultry Association South (warned).
Farmers have changed the feed birds given the lack soybean meal at the national level, due to conflicts in Peru and Bolivia, the second country is the first supplier of legumes to this guild.
“Three months ago we had a problem with soybean meal from Bolivia, first a strike there, now here, and it hurt us economically because soy rose 40% and even with the money we can’t find him in the country,” the spokesman said.
According to Jerry, soy is the second most important ingredient in a balanced bird feed because it contains the proteins that laying hens need to grow. For every ton of food, 20% is the above input.
Egg producers lose S/0.50 per kilogram of eggs
Given the absence of soybean meal, manufacturers have decided to replace it with other ingredients such as cotton paste or sunflower meal, which directly affects egg production which is reduced and does not compensate for the cost of obtaining it.
“Because the price of soybeans has risen, our cost of production is 6.10s, and a kilo of eggs on the farm is sold at a price of 5.6s to 5.8s, so we are losing … Because of the protests, we cannot send production to south of the country and everything is concentrated in Lima,” he explained.
In the small south, the area represented by Avisur employs 100,000 people directly involved in the poultry industry; however, 4 million Peruvians depend on the production of eggs by this guild.
