The Taliban’s treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan could be a “crime against humanity,” G7 foreign ministers said Thursday, calling for the decision to ban them from universities to be reversed.
“Gender-based persecution may constitute a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute, Afghanistan is part of it,” the foreign ministers said in a statement referring to the International Criminal Court (ICC) based in Hague.
“Policy Mr. Taliban policies to remove women from public life will have implications for how our countries interact with Taliban”added the ministers of the richest countries after a virtual meeting.
The Taliban government Afghanistanwho vowed to wield power less dogmatically than in his previous term (1996-2001) when he took office last year, drew worldwide criticism with his decision this week to ban higher education for women.
