Eurostat says that most countries in the European Union have reduced gas consumption by 15%.
The consumption of natural gas in the European Union from August to November of this year decreased by 20% compared to the same periods in the past five years. This was stated in the message of the EU statistical agency Eurostat, published on Tuesday, December 20.
“Natural gas consumption in the EU in August-November 2022 decreased by 20.1% compared to the average gas consumption for the same month (August-November) in the period from 2017 to 2021,” the report said.
The EU Council regulation on coordinated measures to reduce demand for gas, which is part of the REPowerEU plan to eliminate the EU’s dependence on Russian fuel, provides for a reduction of 15% between August 2022 and March 2023.
Eurostat said that in August-November this year, the reduction in natural gas consumption in 18 member countries exceeded the target of 15%. In some – more than 40%. In particular, the largest consumption decreased in Finland (-52.7%), Latvia (-43.2%) and Lithuania (-41.6%).
“Six Member States, which have reduced their consumption of natural gas, have not yet reached the 15% target,” the EU statistics agency said.
At the same time, Malta (+7.1%) and Slovakia (+2.6%) increased their natural gas consumption, Eurostat added.
As you know, EU countries have reached an agreement on setting a gas price limit of 180 euros per MWh, or approximately 1,850 euros per thousand cubic meters.
