‘Velma’, a Scooby-doo spin-off series, will be released exclusively on HBO Max
After years without a new ‘Scooby-Doo’ cartoon, HBO Max announced that the animation ‘Velma’ is set to debut on January 12, 2023. Despite taking place in the Scooby-Doo universe, it is important to remember that this is an adult-oriented cartoon, and has no connection to the animated series.
In October of this year, the new designs of Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Velma, for the new series derived from the classic were revealed, and ended up receiving numerous complaints due to some changes made to the characters.
The actress Mindy Kaling (The Office), voice actress confirmed in the production, commented on the change of the heroine with glasses in her appearance at Comic Con New York.
I think the characters are iconic, but in no way are they defined by being white. She (Velma) was so cute but not traditionally hot… with a questionable haircut. I feel so honored to be able to do the voice…she is a truth teller, cutting through the bullshit in life. When you’re smart and underrated. I hope people appreciate that.”
The series will be officially released by HBO Max and, in addition to mindy like Velma, we will have Constance Wu (Crazy Rich People), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso) and Glenn Howerton (That 80s Show) as Daphne, Shaggy, and Fred, respectively.
In ‘Velma’, we’ll follow the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the girl genius of the mystery class, and in this version we’ll discover more about the past of the most beloved detective in cartoons. Check out the teaser below!
mindy will also be a producer of the series and according to the TVLine, the premiere is scheduled for January 12, 2023, but there is no information on how many episodes will be available and whether their releases will be weekly or biweekly. ‘Velma’ will be released direct to streaming on HBO Max on January 12, 2023.
