The value of the order is more than 336 million US dollars, it should be completed during 2023-2029.
The Swedish Army will upgrade its fleet of Gripen C/D fighters. The defense department signed an agreement with Saab to expand the capabilities and ensure the availability of the aircraft flight system until the mid-2030s. This was announced by the Swedish Defense Logistics Administration (FMV).
It was noted that the value of the order is about 3.5 billion Swedish kronor (more than 336 million US dollars), it should be completed in the period 2023-2029.
The contract also includes an opportunity for FMV to place additional orders in the coming years to further develop capabilities.
As mentioned in the release, the increase in capabilities gives Sweden a more efficient and powerful aircraft, which includes, among other things:
-
improved flight performance and better sensor systems for both self-defense and target measurement and reconnaissance, requirements for attack capability are developed and strengthened,
-
Continuous high availability has been ensured for a long time, and the possibilities of parallel operation of Gripen E and C/D have been expanded.
“The modernization gives the Armed Forces a stronger combat aviation capability and allows the operation of the JAS 39C/D until the mid-2030s,” said Ingela Matiasson, head of FMV’s aviation equipment department.
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen (Swedish: Gripen – Griffin) is a fourth-generation Swedish multirole fighter developed and produced by Saab.
Recall that the German Bundestag approved the purchase of 35 American F-35 fighters.
And in November, Norway bought a record batch of F-35 missiles.
