The US defense department believes that the coming months will be a very dynamic period, when both the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Russian military will try to attack.
The increase in the combat capability of the Ukrainian military will take place in “high urgency” mode. This is what Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Laura Cooper said in an interview with Voice of America.
According to him, the United States intends to increase the number of Ukrainian troops they train every month.
Cooper noted that there is a “totally different game” ahead now, in terms of UAF skills, compared to when the US first began training Ukrainian forces after Russia invaded Crimea in 2014.
“Winter will be a very dynamic period. I think some people think of winter as a time for rest and adjustment, but we don’t see any sign of Ukrainians stopping and we certainly hope that the Russians try to move as well.” Cooper said.
However, he did not confirm claims by US officials this week that the United States is preparing to send a Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine that could help shoot down Russian missiles.
“But I can confirm that air defense is our top priority and we are looking at a number of ways we can support Ukraine and its air defense needs. NASAMS has been a part of that,” he said.
Cooper also confirmed that the US sent Ukraine parts for the S-300 air defense system to maintain air defense capabilities before deploying the NASAMS systems.
“Last spring, we sent spare parts to the Ukrainians to keep their S-300 systems operational. However, the NASAMS systems have a key capability that the Ukrainians immediately used incredibly effectively against Russian missile threats, as well as against Russian unmanned aerial vehicles.” , – said Laura Cooper.
Cooper described the tactics of Russian troops in Ukraine as “a meat grinder in which people are thrown without considering the huge losses.”
Recall that a few days earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the next six months will be decisive.
