Budapest unexpectedly supported Ukraine’s European integration, saying it hoped it would happen soon.
Hungary proposed to speed up Ukraine’s integration with the European Union, but at the same time wanted to maintain close relations with Russia. This is what the chief adviser of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his namesake Balazs Orban said in an interview with Bloomberg.
He said that while Hungary is criticized for promoting Russian interests in the EU, the government in Budapest supports Ukraine’s efforts to join the EU and wants the European Commission to act. He added that the government supports accession to the EU and Serbia.
“We hope that this will happen as soon as possible. The Member States should put pressure on the commission to speed up the process,” the adviser said about Ukraine’s integration into the EU.
At the same time, Balazs Orban mentioned the importance of maintaining relations with Russia.
“The Hungarian position is based on the idea of maintaining relations,” said an adviser to the Hungarian prime minister, speaking about Budapest’s approach to the Russian Federation.
It should be noted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest will not support the European Union’s plan to provide Ukraine with macro-financial assistance for 2023.
Hungary also blocked a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. European diplomats note that Hungary’s actions “are becoming quite predictable.”
