Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday, December 10, hinted at his last bid for a presidential term, announcing that he would then hand over “youth“.
“We will start the construction of the century of Turkey with the support that we are requesting from our people for the last time in 2023.“During a speech in Samsun in the north of the country, the Turkish leader said that if he wins the 2023 elections, it will be his last term. “We will present this sacred flag to our youth“, he added.
A new constitution?
With presidential and legislative elections scheduled for June 2023 approaching, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in power since 2003, and his conservative Islamic party, the AKP, hope to retain control of the country. However, the Turkish president has to face many challenges, including inflation, which has reached 84.4%.
In October, Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated his long-standing desire to draft a new Turkish constitution that would be “democratic, simple and visionary“. This project was perceived by some observers as a desire to change the limit of two presidential terms provided by the Turkish constitution.
