This Sunday, the Bolivian government warned that 18 of the 36 indigenous peoples recognized in the country are in an extremely vulnerable position and risk of extinction, most in the east of the country.

Threatened Indigenous Peoples include the Uru Murato, Yarakares, Esse Eija, Chacobo, Toromona, Takanas, Venayek, Yuki, and Maropa, as well as up to 18 of the 36 Indigenous Peoples recognized by the State’s Political Constitution.

Deputy Minister of Decolonization Pelagio Condori explained that once diagnosed, the goal is to restore, popularize and re-evaluate the knowledge and knowledge of the ancestors indigenous peasants. For this, projects that strengthen their culture will be considered, according to the Bolivian news agency ABI.

Condori mentioned in particular the Uru murato who lost their livelihood when Lake Poopo dwindled due to climate change and environmental impacts. However, the Vice Minister stressed that the Uru Murato nation has grown culturally because many of its customs remain in place, such as their dress, ancestral wisdom and knowledge, ritual ceremonies or traditional medicine.

To the east, the Yurakare people of the Isiboro Secur Indigenous Territory and National Park (TIPNIS) are in danger as their culture and language are being lost. Young people and adults practically do not use their own language, and cultural and ancestral knowledge is not used.

In the case of the Esse Age community, the problem is that their livelihood, the waters of the rivers, are polluted, which puts them in a critical situation for their health and existence.

Faced with this situation, the government created the Directorate-General for the Protection of Indigenous Peoples and Peoples (Digepio), “which works with highly vulnerable and endangered peoples,” Condori said.

Bolivia passes census law after months of tragic protests

Bolivia has set a legislative date for the census in March 2024 after months of tragic protests demanding its completion, its president, Luis Arce, said.

“The census will take place on March 23, 2024, because I promised you all to stand firm on what is technically correct,” the president said in a televised address.

“In order not to shed the blood of the people, we promulgated this Census Law, listening to the people,” he added.
