Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu wants “more active and constructive contacts” from Viktor Khrenin and Alexander Lukashenko.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu traveled to Minsk, presumably to pressure Belarus to support the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. This was announced on Saturday, December 3, by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
In Minsk, Shoigu met with the formal leader of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and the Minister of Defense of Belarus Viktor Khrenin.
“The defense ministers of Russia and Belarus met in Minsk to probably strengthen bilateral security relations between Russia and Belarus. Shoigu is probably trying to pressure Belarus to continue supporting Russia’s offensive campaign in Ukraine,” analysts said.
It should be noted that the Minister of Defense of Russia Sergei Shoigu arrived in Minsk. Khrenin and Shoigu signed a protocol on amending the Agreement between Belarus and the Russian Federation on joint provision of regional security in the military field. Shoigu then went to meet with Alexander Lukashenko. When meeting with Shoigu, he said that “neither you nor we want war and do not want it.” At the same time, according to him, “we, as a group, an army, are preparing now.”
On the eve of Lukashenka and Putin spoke on the phone and agreed to meet in December. It was reported that they “drafted a schedule for further contacts, agreeing to hold a meeting in December to discuss practical issues of implementing union formation and economic issues.”
