On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Hryhoriy Skovoroda, a monument to the Ukrainian philosopher and poet appeared in the US capital in Washington. This was announced on Saturday, December 3, by the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova.
He noted that the monument was built in the courtyard of the Ukrainian House, and it was created in 1992.
“For a long time, the monument, like Hryhoriy Skovoroda himself, traveled in search of his place and now it is found in the Ukrainian House. It is a symbol that Hryhoriy Savvich is looking towards Ukraine from Washington,” said by Markarova.
He also recalled that the Russian invaders destroyed the Skovoroda museum in the Kharkiv region – a shell hit the building.
“They still will not be able to destroy either Ukraine or the memory of the outstanding Ukrainian philosopher, whose life and works since the 18th century have been evidence of our identity, our true history and our main national character – the eternity of love for freedom / will and readiness to fight for it! Let’s win, we will rebuild the Museum in Skovorodinovka!” – emphasized the ambassador.
The author of the monument erected in Washington DC is the American sculptor Mark Rhodes.
