Background

This is not the first time the Islamic Republic has announced the arrest of alleged agents working for the intelligence services of foreign countries, including Israel.

Tehran reported in July the arrest of “agents” linked to the Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service. According to Iran, they were members of a banned Kurdish rebel group for planning an attack on a “sensitive center of defense.”

The Iranian government often accuses Israel of sabotaging its nuclear facilities and killing key figures, including scientists.

November 23 Tehran accused Israel of the death in Syria of Colonel Dawood Jafari, who belonged to the aerospace department of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He is the highest-ranking Revolutionary Guard officer to be killed in Syria since Tehran announced the “martyrdom” of General Abolfazl Alijani, a member of the Guard’s ground forces then on a mission in Syria, on August 23, when Tehran announced the “martyrdom”. (AFP)
