zoo Puerto Rico Dr. Juan A Rivero in Mayaguez (West), the only one on the island closed to the public five years ago after the devastating Hurricane Maria that killed more than 300 people. animals that they live in their cells remains uncertain.
Fundación Salvemos el Zoológico Dr. Juan A. Rivero on Tuesday proposed a public-private partnership through the National Parks Program and Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) to reach a solution.
Images shared by Puerto Rican journalist Valeria Collazo on social media in early November showed the animals living in unsanitary conditions, with bears being the most disturbing area due to high indoor temperatures.
Following the release of these audiovisual files, the people of Puerto Rico demanded a solution from the government, including offering to send animals to accredited shrines.
“We have a lot of people willing to help, to contribute and with a sincere desire that this place can function properly and open its doors as all Puerto Ricans hope,” said Lynette Matos, president of the organization. Fundación Salvemos el Zoologico Dr. Juan A. rivero.
In his statement, Matos insisted that “joining the efforts of the public and private sectors” could find a solution to rescue animals.
“The proposal arises from a process we have conducted that includes feasibility studies, sustainability, marketing, tourism, the creation of a zoological master plan among other important details,” he added.
DNRA hired architect Astrid Diaz and ADV Architects to expand the habitats of the animals and create a zoo for educational, research, tourism, conservation and conservation purposes.
“If the DNR needs help to improve the territory The Bears, we are willing to cooperate to improve this and other areas. We have always said “be present”, and this time is no exception. The most important thing is that the animals are under human supervision, this is always paramount,” Matos concluded.
passage Hurricane Maria caused great destruction in Puerto Rico and a complete blackout, leaving some Puerto Ricans without access to electricity for up to a year.
The island authorities initially estimated the death toll from Hurricane in 64 people, but later studies raised this figure to 3000 deaths.
