Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeausupported protesters in China on Tuesday to defend the right to protest in the country as part of a wave of protests in several cities across the country due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Trudeau, who assured that Canadians are “watching the situation in China very closely,” said he supports people who “express themselves” in protests against the Chinese government’s “COVID ZERO” policies.

“Obviously, everyone China they need to be given a voice, they need to be allowed to speak their mind and basically protest.” Head of Government of Canada.

In this sense, Justin Trudeau argued that it is necessary to ensure that the Chinese authorities respect the right of journalists to inform, “to do their job”.

“We are going to continue to make sure that China knows that we will protect human rights, we will support people who express their opinion,” he added in statements to reporters.

The Central Political and Legal Committee of the Communist Party of China called on Monday for “strong action” against protesters who have taken to the streets in recent days to protest the strict “Zero Covid” policy.

Origin of mobilizations

Protests in various parts of China were triggered by a fire in the city of Urumqi in the western region of Xinjiang, where at least ten people died, allegedly due to the slow response of firefighters due to restrictions due to the coronavirus.

For this reason, the Chinese authorities have stepped up the widespread deployment of police in various cities of the country to prevent further demonstrations.

China currently has the highest number of coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic. In fact, a spokesman for the National Health Commission elaborated on Tuesday that “all localities are making firm efforts to prevent and control the epidemic.”

UN calls for respect for protests

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Last Monday, he asked Chinese authorities not to “arbitrarily” detain protesters who are peacefully protesting health restrictions and calling for more freedom.

“We call on the authorities to respond to the demonstrations in accordance with international law and standards human rights”said the representative, Jeremy Lawrenceadding, “No one should be arbitrarily detained for peacefully expressing their views.”
