Ukraine’s air defense remains a top priority for the Pentagon and its allies, but the supply of air defense systems from the United States is out of the question.
So far, the Pentagon has no plans to provide Patriot systems to Ukraine. This was stated in a briefing on November 29 by the spokesperson of the US Defense Department, Pat Ryder, Voice of America reports.
“Air defense remains a top priority for the US Department of Defense and the international community when it comes to supporting Ukraine. As for the Patriot batteries from the US, we are not currently planning to supply them to Ukraine,” he says.
Ryder also commented on the possibility of sending the Patriot air defense system to Kyiv by US allies.
“I don’t want to speak on behalf of other countries, but this is a sovereign decision of the states. Since it concerns NATO countries, I assume that it will be part of the discussion of the alliance. We will continue to work closely with the international community to determine what Ukraine’s defense needs are, and satisfy them,” a Pentagon spokesman said.
He explained that modern weapon systems do not work on a “plug and play” basis, their use requires special training.
“When it comes to some capabilities, like the Patriot system, or M1 tanks, or advanced fighters, these are capabilities that require a lot of support, maintenance and training. None of these systems are plug and play. You can’t just show up at battlefield and start using them. We consider such details when it comes to more advanced systems,” Ryder said.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance was discussing the possibility of providing Ukraine with Patriot systems.
