Hundreds of people demonstrated on Sunday in Shanghaiat the universities of Beijing and in other cities Chinawhere outrage is growing at the draconian “zero COVID” policy imposed by the authorities for almost three years.
AT Shanghaia city of more than 25 million people that experienced a two-month lockdown this year that caused food shortages, hundreds of people silently marched through the center of the metropolis.
As the witness explained AFPdemonstrators held blank sheets of paper in their hands, a gesture that has become a symbol of protest against censorship in China- and white flowers.
The police later arrived and dispersed them, said a witness who requested anonymity.
A few hours earlier, a crowd had gathered near Woolumuki Street, the city’s Chinese name. Urumqi- with people shouting “Xi Jinping, resign, resign!”, a rare show of rejection of the Chinese president, according to a video posted on social media and geolocated AFP.
AT UrumqiIn the Xinjiang region (west) on Thursday, ten people died as a result of a fire. The incident sparked outrage on social media, believing that the confinement made it more difficult to rescue the victims.
“Brave People”
Protest participant Shanghai who asked not to be named said AFP that he arrived at a demonstration when “a group of people paid their respects and left flowers on the pavement, while another group shouted slogans.”
According to him, there were small skirmishes, but in general the police behaved in a “civilized” manner.
“It’s great to see so many like-minded people coming together,” he added. “It’s impressive that there are still brave people under the current circumstances.”
Authorities were quick to delete online posts about the protests as soon as the videos began to go viral.
