April 26 is a tragic date for Ukraine and the world. On this day, in 1986, one of the greatest man -made disasters occurred – the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
On Tuesday, April 26, Ukraine celebrated the 36th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
This event, later called the tragedy of the twentieth century, became the greatest catastrophe ever made by man. Then, during the explosion in the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, a large release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere took place. The force of the explosion was equivalent to 500 bombs – like the one once dropped on Hiroshima.
April 26, 1986 at 1.23 am a series of explosions destroyed the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Unsuccessful testing of the reactor resulted in a catastrophe. It was only on May 10 that the fire was completely extinguished.
Within fifteen days, 50 megacuries of nuclear fuel were released into the atmosphere. The radioactive cloud covers three countries: Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
The evacuation did not begin until the second day, as Soviet authorities covered up the disaster. Just 36 hours after the disaster, nearly fifty thousand people were evacuated.
They carried only bare necessities, mostly just documents, promised them that they would go home in two or three days. However, none of them came back here. In total, 115 thousand people were evacuated from Pripyat and the surrounding communities.
This year, the Chernobyl tragedy had a new demand due to the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine and fighting over nuclear power plants, dubbed “nuclear terrorism.”
“Even after many years, we have observed that the methods of the USSR, adopted by Russia, continue to threaten everyone around. Otherwise, it is impossible to explain the reasons why Russian troops hid the ammunition and mines the area around Chernobyl. nuclear power plant, “said Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. added that the enemy would surely suffer for this punishment.
It was previously reported that the Russian occupiers had destroyed Chernobyl documents and archives.
