Russian President Vladimir Putin presided over the launching of the world’s largest nuclear-powered icebreaker, project 22220 Yakutia, in the port of St. Petersburg.
Yakutia, 170 meters long and 57 meters wide, is equipped with two nuclear reactors and a powerful shield capable of breaking through the Arctic ice.
This is the fourth icebreaker of the 22220 series, built at the Baltic Shipyard in close cooperation with Rosatom.
As part of this series, the construction of which began in 2013, it includes the launching of five icebreakers, of which Arktika and Sibir have already been put into operation.
Vladimir Putin emphasized that this and other icebreakers are necessary for the development of the Northern Sea Route, “which will allow Russia make full use of its export potential” and “lay an effective logistics route, including to Southeast Asia.”

“The development of the northern regions will largely ensure the future of our country,” he said, recalling that with climate change and ice melting, the demand for icebreakers is increasing.
“We will increase the potential of our fleet”
For this, Vladimir Putin He added: “We will increase the capacity of our fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers.”
“By the way, we are open to cooperation with our partners, with those who want to work with Russia”, he assured.
Also, Vladimir Putin He also gave the go-ahead to raise the flag to another icebreaker, the Ural, with which he had already joined the Russian fleet.
The head of the Kremlin stressed the importance of meeting the deadlines for launching the Ural in 2024, Chukotka in 2026 and Rossiya already at the shipyards of the Far East in 2027.

Russia It is the quintessence of the Arctic power, both due to its geographical location and the fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers, the only ones capable of breaking ice and sailing the northern seas for twelve months a year.
The Kremlin wants to promote the Arctic route as an alternative to the Suez Canal, as the thinning of the ice makes transporting goods faster, though still no less expensive.
The ship has to travel 10,600 kilometers to get north from the Russian city of Murmansk to the Chinese port of Shanghai, and if it decides to cross the English Channel, it will need to travel 17,700 kilometers.
In addition, the passage through the Suez takes an average of 35 days, while the artery advanced Russia It represents a savings of 10-12 days on the ship, that is, a third shorter.
According to the Russian government, trading companies will also save up to 500 million euros per year due to “lower carbon emissions”.
