They have issued a letter of formal notice calling on the Whitehaven Company, Australia’s largest coal producer, to cease operations immediately. With this symbolic document in hand, 25 environmental activists from the Rising Tide movement stormed the company’s offices in Newcastle and demanded that this subpoena be delivered to the company’s CEO. Unsuccessful, they first called the members of the company’s board of directors one by one on their personal phone numbers to read their letters, then occupied the reception desk for several hours until the police intervened. 5 of them, refusing to comply after being asked to leave the area, were eventually arrested as planned.
