Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, during his visit to Finland on Sunday, November 20, proposed to confiscate Russian assets in the EU in favor of Ukraine, and was supported by Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin this idea, reports Yle.
So, at a briefing in Helsinki, Morawiecki said that in relation to the war in Ukraine, it is necessary to take stricter measures against Russia. In particular, Poland and Finland plan to promote asset confiscation at the next EU summit.
According to the Polish prime minister, the confiscated funds should be used in favor of Ukraine.
“We must hit Russia harder than it expects,” Morawiecki insisted.
In this regard, the head of the Finnish government supported the proposal of his colleague.
“I hope that the (European) Commission will find legal solutions to implement these measures,” Marin said.
Also, the prime ministers of Poland and Finland spoke to the Ukrainians and expressed their support.
“We fully support Ukraine in its struggle against Russia. We are for you and with you when you defend your country and European values,” said Finnish Prime Minister Sana Marin.
Mateusz Morawiecki emphasized that Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and sovereignty.
“But we strongly feel that you are also fighting for European values, European security and European future. Therefore, you will always have our support. It is not just words, but actions and facts,” said the prime minister of Poland.
In addition, the prime ministers discussed Finland’s future membership in NATO, EU issues and bilateral relations. For Morawiecki, this is the first visit to Finland since he took office as the head of the Polish government in 2017.
Recall that in October Morawiecki proposed to divide the assets of the Russian Federation between Ukraine and the EU. He said that Poland “is subject to enormous stress related to the war in Ukraine.”
Remember, on November 14, the UN General Assembly supported a resolution proposing to introduce a mechanism for paying damages to Ukraine as a result of the war unleashed by Russia. The document was supported by 94 countries, abstained – 74, against – 13.
After that, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia has to pay reparations for the war in Ukraine – this is now part of the international legal reality.
