Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he did not want to put “Ukraine’s interests” ahead of Budapest’s interests.
Hungary will not support the European Union’s plan to provide Ukraine with macro-financial assistance for 2023. This was said by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a speech at a conference in Budapest, Sky News reports.
According to him, although he “condemns Russia’s aggression and supports the Ukrainian people,” he does not want to “put the interests” of Ukraine before the interests of his country.
Hungary’s refusal to approve the EU plan threatens to derail it entirely. The reason for this is that changes in the EU’s financial policies require the unanimous approval of member countries.
Orban also offered an “alternative” to the plan. In particular, he recommended that the 27 EU members determine how much they are willing to give to Ukraine and distribute the amount “proportionately and fairly” among themselves, without jointly taking out loans to pay.
According to him, Hungary is ready to provide Ukraine from 152.2 to 177.6 million US dollars from its own budget in bilateral terms. He said that this amount would not cause major damage to Hungary’s national interests.
It should be noted that the package provides for the payment of up to 18 billion euros in the form of regular payments to support energy and medical institutions in Ukraine, financial wages and pension programs.
It will be remembered, the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto believes that the imposition of sanctions against Russia by the European Union was allegedly a “gross mistake”, in his opinion, it “caused damage” to the EU countries.
In addition, Hungary agreed with the sanctioned Iran to start cooperation in the economic field.
