The German federal government is asking Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to decide on a political course.
German authorities have called on Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to make the final choice between the country’s hopes of joining the European Union and maintaining partnership relations with the Russian Federation. On Tuesday, November 1, Welt wrote.
As the newspaper notes, citing a source in the German government, against the background of the “development of the geopolitical situation,” Serbia must immediately decide how it sees its political future – as a member of EU or a Russian partner.
The publication writes that Germany is “surprised and disappointed” that Serbia signed a cooperation agreement with Russia. From the candidate countries, according to the source, to Germany, on the contrary, they expect the imposition of sanctions against the Russian Federation.
“If Vučić leads the country in the direction of strengthening relations with the EU, Germany will support him, and continued relations with Russia will lead to the opposite consequences,” government circles told the publication.
Serbia remains the only candidate for EU membership that has not yet imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation.
As you know, Serbia aims to join the EU. However, its further integration with Europe is impossible without the ratification of sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
In addition, Vučić has previously said that he sees “signs of a world war” in the way Russia’s war against Ukraine is unfolding.
