The Bolivian government announced this Wednesday that it is temporarily suspending export of soybeans, sugar, oil and beef because of the risk of food shortages from the country, because of the indefinite strike called in Santa Cruz, because of the delays in the census preventing access to assistance. Industrial Development Minister Nestor Huanca announced that the measure was taken “to ensure food security”.
The measure comes into effect at dawn this Thursday “until normal supply conditions are restored to the entire population of Bolivia,” he said at a press conference compiled by Unitel TV.
Huanca blamed the organizers of the strike for the consequences of the paralysis of the industrial sector, as well as for the attack on food security for Bolivians.
“They are responsible for the millionaire damage and loss caused to Santa Cruz and the national manufacturing apparatus,” he said, before clarifying that it was a preventive measure.
In this regard, the minister asked the local authorities of Santa Cruz for “reflection”, where an indefinite strike was set for five days, to start negotiations with the aim of resuming food production.
The Bolivian government has decided to postpone until 2024 the population census, originally scheduled for the first half of 2023, arguing that ideal conditions for it do not exist due to a number of technical and logistical shortcomings that are part of the consequences left behind by the coronavirus pandemic. new coronavirus.
However, the position of Santa Cruz Governor Luis Fernando Camacho, who is one of the key players in the political crisis that caused the departure of Evo Morales after the 2019 elections, argues that this delay is illegal, since the census should be carried out every ten years, and previous statistics, starting from 2012 is not reliable for the redistribution of federal budgets.
Arce accuses the right to be a coup plotter
Bolivian President Luis Arce denounced from Cochabamba last Monday that right-wing politicians have embarked on a new “coup d’état gamble”, as happened in 2019, with the current Civil strike in the province of Santa Cruz.
“The debate must take into account what is happening in our country. A situation where the old right, right-wing coups, want to continue the coup gamble in our country and, no doubt, as in 2020, the entire peasant movement, the popular movement, to stop them,” Arce said.
