North Korean spaceport base Sohae shows a large modernization process, according to an analysis published today by a specialized website Beyond the Parallel from satellite photos taken this week.
According to the study, these upgrade plans will provide North Korea a facility capable of launching “larger and more complex space rockets and supporting the development of technologies that could also be used in the regime’s new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) programs.”
Kim Chen In visited Sohe (located in the northwest of the country, close to the border with China) in March of this year and asked to expand the launch area and improve the general assembly and fuel injection and delivery facilities, or launch control center, in order to be able to launch “large launch vehicles and deploy new reconnaissance satellites.
Analysis of the specialized network attached to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Washingtonemphasizes that the construction process is ongoing, especially on the eastern edge of the Sohae base, where the construction of a tunnel or underground facility is highlighted, the future use of which is unknown.
Photographs taken on October 25 and contrasting with others taken 20 days earlier show that, in addition to work to expand and upgrade the launch pad, fuel and oxidizer stores, coolant tanks or new logistics buildings are expanding and destruction – as in the case of the satellite control center, and renovation of other buildings in the complex.
This activity currently makes it impossible to conduct any launches, according to an analysis signed by Joseph Bermudez, Victor Cha and Jennifer June, although the vertical platform used for engine testing is in a “fully functional” state.

In addition to launching space rockets, Sohae is also the North Korean regime’s main testing ground for its liquid fuel engines, especially those that can be used in its ICBM missiles.
North Korea, which refused to resume dialogue with South Korea or the United States after the failure of the Hanoi summit in 2019, has been in complete isolation from the outside world since the beginning of the pandemic and in January 2021 approved a weapons modernization plan that will formalize work in Sohae.
The satellites also showed that Pyongyang He spent months preparing to conduct a new atomic test in Pungeri (north-east of the country). (EFE)
