Amnesty International asked International Criminal Court (CPI) explore possible war crimes perpetrated in August by Israeli forces and Palestinian militants during their bloody battles in The loop.
The three-day conflict claimed the lives of 31 civilians out of 49 Palestinians killed in Gaza Stripunder Israeli blockade, according to a new report from the human rights organization.
The London organization called CPI “to urgently investigate any apparent war crimes committed during the Israeli offensive in August 2022” in the Palestinian enclave.
“Amnesty International collected and analyzed new evidence of illegal attacks, including possible war crimesperpetrated by both Israeli forces and armed Palestinian groups,” he added.
what the report says
The report details an attack on the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza that killed seven civilians.
The shelling “may have been caused by a missed missile fired by Palestinian armed groups,” said Amnesty International.
The fighting began on August 5, when Israel preemptively attacked the Islamic Jihad militant group to prevent attacks.
The Palestinian group responded with rocket salvos, there were no casualties among the Israelis.
An Amnesty investigation found that the attack, which killed five children at the cemetery, “may have been carried out by an Israeli drone-launched guided missile.”
The third incident, which Amnesty International believes could constitute a war crime, was an Israeli tank attack on a house in the southern district of Khan Yunis, which killed a civilian.
2014 conflict investigation
The International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which should in part focus on possible war crimes committed during the 2014 conflict in Gaza.
The investigation is supported by the Palestinian Authority, but Israel is not a member of the ICC and rejects its jurisdiction.
The August violence was preceded by four wars between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza since 2008.
The Palestinian enclave faced a blockade imposed by Israel in 2007 after the Islamist movement Hamas took control of the territory.
Hamas said its fighters were not involved in the August conflict.
