A significant part of the country’s military equipment comes from the time of the USSR, it needs modernization, Anatoly Nosaty said.
Most of Moldova’s military equipment comes from the Soviet era and needs to be replaced immediately. This was said by the Minister of Defense of Moldova Anatoly Nosatii, reports Radio Liberty.
He said the money allocated by the government for defense is small but still important for the country’s underfunded and underequipped army.
“About 90 percent of (military equipment) is of Soviet origin and dates from the 1960s-1980s, and it is in dire need of modernization, because you cannot upgrade a ZIL-131 (military truck) or an anti -aircraft system made in the 1970s,” – said the official.
The 0.5 percent of GDP that the government allocates to defense (about $25.5 million), although small, is still very important for modernization projects.
Remember that mobilization can be announced in Moldova if the conflict in Ukraine reaches the borders of the countries.
