Russian forces continue to conduct ground operations in the Donetsk region, but Russian sources have denied claiming control of the city.
Russian forces are likely to continue falsifying claims of an offensive in the Bakhmut region to show their gains in at least one sector against the backdrop of ongoing losses in northeastern and southern Ukraine. This was announced by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in a report for October 20.
It was noted that on October 20, RIA Novosti published a map showing Ukrainian control over most of Bakhmut, despite repeated claims by many Russian sources that Russian forces were operating in the city itself .
“This confirms ISW’s assessment that Russian forces are likely to fake claims of an offensive in the Bakhmut area to show success in at least one sector amid ongoing losses in the region,” said analysts.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said that Russian troops plan to occupy Bakhmut by the end of October.
